What Are the Ethics in Psychological Research?

Informed consent –

This means that the researcher or a psychologist when conducting a test or an experiment must get permission from the participants or the subject before the research starts. The participant should be aware of the purpose of the reason, the procedures, and his or her role in the following before he or she gives their permission. Adults above eighteen years of age can give their consent, but for minors, a parent or a guardian’s permission is a must. One drawback of informed consent is that since participants are aware that a test is being conducted on them and are throughout conscious, they might react and behave differently compared to when they aren’t being watched. So, the results of the research get affected as it can not be relied upon. There is a consent form that needs to fill before the research for the record.

Important information in informed consent -

In informed consent a subject must be provided with some necessary details, these are –
  • Participation is a voluntary will and if at any time they want to quit and leave the experiment they have full power to. No consequences will be put off them and they can leave freely without any damage to cost.
  • What is the significance of the experiment, its purpose, and the procedures?
  • If any risk or discomfort is predicted in the research, then it should be told beforehand
  • What is the expected duration of the research work
  • Who should the subject and participants speak to for any doubt or question?
  • A promise to keep the identity of the subject confidential.

Maintain confidentiality –

The researcher must respect the privacy of the subject or the participants. Their identity and the information obtained from them through the research should be kept private until and unless they give permission. The lab report also does not mention the names of the subjects. There are times when a researcher is found to have a dilemma, whether to disclose the identity of his subject if found out to be a criminal during an experiment. What would you have picked, a researcher’s duty, or a citizen’s duty?
